For a town of just over 3,300 people, there sure is plenty to see and do in Inuvik.
Here is a list of the 10 must-visit attractions.
1. The most popular tourist attraction in Inuvik, a trip is not complete without a photo in front of the Igloo Church. Built in 1960 by a team of volunteers and officially named Our Lady of Victory.
2. The only all-weather Canadian road to cross the Arctic Circle. The Dempster Highway is an adventure through spectacular scenery. It is not uncommon for drivers to see plenty of wildlife.
3. A friendly greeting that welcomes all those who enter our town. Our Welcome Sign is especially appealing to those who drove to Inuvik using the Dempster Highway. Everyone needs a photo!
4. Located on Mackenzie Road as soon as you enter town, the Western Arctic Visitor Centre contains many interesting exhibits of art, flora and fauna, neighbouring communities and wildlife.
5. The Mackenzie River is the longest in Canada at just under 1,800 kilometres, and flows past Inuvik to the east. In the winter, the Mackenzie freezes and turns into an ice road.
6. Ingamo Hall hosts many cultural events. It is also the largest log building north of the Arctic Circle. It was built in 1977 when 850 logs were rafted down the Mackenzie River from Fort Simpson!
7. The Inuvik Ski Club has a large network of groomed trails and with 7 months of snow cover, it enjoys one of the longest ski seasons anywhere. Beginner or expert, there's a trail for you!
8. Complete with a driving range and an ever-expanding six-hole track, Roads End Golf Course is a must play for any fan of golf. With the facility open 24 hours, you can have the opportunity to play a round under the Midnight Sun!
9. Our geodesic dome was part of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) radar stations that once dotted the Canadian Arctic. It now serves as the office building for the local cable company.
10. Converted from an old hockey arena, the Inuvik Greenhouse allows local inhabitants the opportunity to take advantage of the 24 hour sunlight and grow fruits, vegetables and plants.
